Man Uses Wheelchair To Shovel Out

You'd think this is an accessory that would be semi-available by now, but it isn't. Anyone want to help me turn into a snowplow? I'm only half joking... when it snows in any significant amount, I'm messed up for a week or more (along with plenty of other PWDs) because snow gets piled at curbs and bus stops, making it hard to get anywhere.

The article is old and the video link is dead, but
he has the video on his website. Here someone else on YouTube also using a motorized chair as a plow.

Carol Burnett, Julie Andrews, Groucho Marx [Feb. 1st, 2008|03:40 pm]

[Current Mood | amused]

I was looking at random journals, thanks to the no-doubt soon to be controversial new Explore LJ feature, and stumbled across [info]oldhollywood.  As with many communities, not every post is great, or even good.  But folks have linked to some nifty things, like:

Carol Burnett and Julie Andrews at Carnegie Hall (1962)

and

Groucho Marx in a scene from "Monkey Business"

I could watch this kind of stuff all day... which doesn't really mean anything, because both are very different kinds of performances, with the common thread being "made well before I was born".  Which includes just a few years of television and media, you know?

I'm behind the curve, so I've just found out about Lookwell, a kooky television pilot written and produced by Conan O'Brien and Robert Smigel in the early 90s.  The internet likes it, but the internet always likes Adam West.  I'd watch it, too.

Moron waving around "$100,000" in cash wants to buy all of the iPhones at a store in Dallas to sell them on eBay.
She pays a guy $800 for his spot at the head of the line.
Once the AT&T store opens, she is told there is a limit of 1 phone per customer.
Guy gets free iPhone.

[Current Music |"Somewhere Over The Rainbow"]

Okay, so you can go a lot of ways with this... like, why is a six year old on this show?  Is it fair to her, or anyone else?  What will they do with her as she gets to the next round(s)?  Why is there an audience for the auditions?  Why is Simon less of a jerk (in general, I've heard) on this show, than on American Idol?  Are there kids her age that can sing better? Is she the best?

But come on... the cuteness factor here is through the roof.

The cellphone salesman opera guy is pretty damn good, too (though a little pitchy here, if you ask me).

The Price is... Extremely Frustrating? [Jun. 6th, 2007|02:35 pm]

[Current Mood | amused]

So, Bob Barker is retiring this week. And people are sad. And there will be a new host of "The Price is Right" soon, and this is a very emotional thing for America, you see.

I grew up with the show, like lots of people did, but I haven't seen it in ages. So of course I did not know about this contestant, dubbed by the person who uploaded this clip on YouTube as:

One of the Worst The Price Is Right Players Ever

If I didn't know any better, I'd say that this is the moment that Bob Barker snapped and decided he couldn't do it anymore, the importance of spaying and neutering be damned.

[Current Music |"Lambada", Kaoma]

The year is 1989, and the American public is being scandalized by a wild new dance craze called the Lambada...

Luckily, Latin Americans aren't particularly ruffled, and adopt this latest Brazilian (but actually French and stolen from Bolivia) import with open arms.  And so, Spanish-speaking gatherings everywhere have impromptu Lambada danceoffs for the next year, where every self-respecting 9 year old girl is ready to show her stuff.

(Except me, of course.  But I sure wanted to be!)

Surprisingly moving. To me, anyway.

Slightly less powerful, but also happy, is this Flash game.  It is simple, addictive, and has lovely music.  I may never do anything again.

Also kind of cool is the original recording of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue; it's old and tinny, but also different than what we've all heard a thousand times.

[Current Mood | amused]
[Current Music |"Maria la del Barrio", Thalia]

And the quality television I grew up on:

It's the opening credits to a hugely popular Mexican soap opera called Maria la del Barrio, starring ThalĂa, who I guess around these parts is most famous for a KMart clothing line, and being married to Tommy Mottola.  She's also missing a rib.  Or two, I can't remember.

I also can't lie, I loved her novelas (which Wikipedia can tell you all about), at least the 3 mid-90s ones.  I didn't watch the last one (I was away from home by then) and the earlier ones, I'm not sure we got here.  The one I've mentioned is my favorite.  Just so over the top, and YouTube delivers fond televised memories of the Thalia era.   This scene ("Perfecto!!!!!" - thanks, David), which leads to the end of the soap, and shows the dramatic death of the insane evil villainess, is awesome.  Somewhere near the end of that clip they also show the miraculous recovery of the "crippled" (and therefore always frumpy dressing) girl who is in love with the previously put-up-for-adoption son of Thalia's previously insane and poor character, before she became wealthy and found him again 15 years later, after adopting a girl herself, whose parents later come looking for her.  Oh, there's just so much ridiculous detail, I feel bad if you don't know.

Political jingles ain't what they used to be [Jul. 12th, 2006|05:21 pm]

I bet more people would vote if the campaign ads had snappy jingles, like they used to...

Witness the following two videos, and just try to get "Kennedy, Kennedy, Kennedy!" out of your head:

1960 Kennedy jingle

1972, "Nixon Now"

By the way, what's the secret to embedding YouTube videos in LJ?
