It's Telethon time... [Sep. 3rd, 2007|01:14 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , ]
[Current Mood | thoughtful]

Kay at The Gimp Parade says:

Sigh. It's that time of year again. Miss Crip Chick and Kara Sheridan are leading the online protest against this tiresome Weekend of Celebrating Pity through the Jerry Lewis MDA telethon by asking bloggers to write about charity, pity, the medical model of disability, the tyranny of the belief that we all need a cure, and the asshattery of Jerry Lewis. That's for tomorrow, Monday, the United States' Labor Day.

Miss Crip Chick explains:

Jerry Lewis is the host of the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Annual Telethon, a telethon that occurs every Labor Day to raise funds for cures by using disabled people as posterchildren. Disabled people protest the telethon because of its outdated, negative portrayal of disabilities. These images that the telethon promotes sticks in people’s minds and continually serve as a barrier for disabled people. Disability is not the problem, but rather the attitudes and barriers that society places on us.

What can we do? Protest. Write a Letter to the Editor. Tell people about the charity, medical, and social model of disability. Blog. Kara and I, along with the Disability Activist Collective (website coming soon) are organizing a campaign against the telethon and the charity model of disability. We need bloggers (not only disability bloggers but all! feminist, queer, woc, environmentalist, activists, great time to build alliances) who will agree to write about this! The campaign will work much like a blog carnival and will be heavily publicized in listservs and other sources of media.

And so is born:

Protest Pity

Welcome to the first annual Anti-Telethon Blogswarm (online gathering of bloggers to bring attention to an important issue). By stopping by, you’ve joined our protest against pity. We are excited to share with you the thoughts, feelings, and words of power expressed in the links below. This unique way to voice opposition will allow our chants to be heard across the world and we invite you to join us in solidarity! If you didn?t have time to write, didn’t know what to say, or weren’t sure how you felt before today, there are still opportunities to act. Post a comment, forward our link, write a newspaper, tell your friends, or educate someone in the community about why your life isn’t defined by pity. Thank-you so much for joining us and LEAD ON!

I am someone who agrees with this sentiment 1000%.  However, the opinions linked to and shared on that site are worth viewing by anyone who is against pity, regardless of how you feel about the telethon.  Many thanks to everyone involved in putting it all together for all the world to see and discuss.

So, Bob Barker is retiring this week. And people are sad. And there will be a new host of "The Price is Right" soon, and this is a very emotional thing for America, you see.

I grew up with the show, like lots of people did, but I haven't seen it in ages. So of course I did not know about this contestant, dubbed by the person who uploaded this clip on YouTube as:

One of the Worst The Price Is Right Players Ever

If I didn't know any better, I'd say that this is the moment that Bob Barker snapped and decided he couldn't do it anymore, the importance of spaying and neutering be damned.

[Current Music |"Maria la del Barrio", Thalia]

And the quality television I grew up on:

It's the opening credits to a hugely popular Mexican soap opera called Maria la del Barrio, starring Thalía, who I guess around these parts is most famous for a KMart clothing line, and being married to Tommy Mottola.  She's also missing a rib.  Or two, I can't remember.

I also can't lie, I loved her novelas (which Wikipedia can tell you all about), at least the 3 mid-90s ones.  I didn't watch the last one (I was away from home by then) and the earlier ones, I'm not sure we got here.  The one I've mentioned is my favorite.  Just so over the top, and YouTube delivers fond televised memories of the Thalia era.   This scene ("Perfecto!!!!!" - thanks, David), which leads to the end of the soap, and shows the dramatic death of the insane evil villainess, is awesome.  Somewhere near the end of that clip they also show the miraculous recovery of the "crippled" (and therefore always frumpy dressing) girl who is in love with the previously put-up-for-adoption son of Thalia's previously insane and poor character, before she became wealthy and found him again 15 years later, after adopting a girl herself, whose parents later come looking for her.  Oh, there's just so much ridiculous detail, I feel bad if you don't know.

Then do not CLICK HERE!

a0,,378380,00.jpg

This is exploitation television at its best!!!

The Brit's are adapting a Dutch reality TV show called Miss Ability, which has become the surprise hit of 2006 in the Netherlands

The show is a beauty contest complete with a swimsuit round. But all the contestants in the latest reality format to sweep ratings-hungry broadcasters have a disability. Contestants must display a "handicap visible to the eye."

Twelve women, including amputees and wheelchair-bound contestants, parade in nightgowns and bathing suits.

They star in short films demonstrating how they have overcome severe disabilities before submitting to a viewer vote.

Could this show fly in America?

We'll see!

A production company has already bought the rights to pitch it and produce it here!

Now, I'm not a fan of pageants in general.  But it's good to know that Perez thinks women with disabilities are just ripe for exploiting, and that he can't wait to watch!

Just stealing this from Wired and everyone else, because it's too good not to:

Your Own Personal Internet

The Senate Commerce Committee deadlocked 11 to 11 on an amendment inserting some very basic net neutrality provisions into a moving telecommunications bill. The provisions didn't prohibit an ISP from handling VOIP faster than emails, but would have made it illegal to handle its own VOIP packets faster than a competitor's.

Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) explained why he voted against the amendment and gave an amazing primer on how the internet works.

There's one company now you can sign up and you can get a movie delivered to your house daily by delivery service. Okay. And currently it comes to your house, it gets put in the mail box when you get home and you change your order but you pay for that, right.

But this service isn't going to go through the interent and what you do is you just go to a place on the internet and you order your movie and guess what you can order ten of them delivered to you and the delivery charge is free.

Ten of them streaming across that internet and what happens to your own personal internet?

Oh, those schizophrenic Christians [Feb. 7th, 2006|11:55 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

From Newsweek:

Chad Allen: former drug-using teen heartthrob, lapsed Roman Catholic, gay activist and ... Christian missionary. The choice of the openly gay Allen as the lead actor in "End of the Spear," a new Christian-made movie about the real-life story of a son who makes peace with an Amazon tribe that killed his missionary father, has created a dilemma for moviegoers who want to support the movie's message, but not its messenger. "This story is perhaps one of the most precious, well-known mission stories of the last century," says Jason Janz, an assistant pastor in Colorado who brought attention to the issue on his fundamentalist blog, SharperIron.org. "I believe it was bad judgment to cast one of Hollywood's foremost gay activists in the leading role." But, at the same time, other religious leaders—including Jerry Falwell, who has publicly preached against homosexuals—are encouraging their congregations to see the movie.

The schizophrenic response from the Christian community is a blow to the movie's producers, who were hoping for a unified "Passion of the Christ"-type turnout. "It's disappointing," says Jim Hanon, the film's director and co-writer. "Especially because the message of the story is that you should reach out in love to people you disagree with."

I am not unsympathetic to unions and their issues.  My parents' union authorized a strike in the winter of 1995, and the fight was against some significant benefit cutbacks.  It wasn't a good time for lots of people, but the union prevailed.

I understand that the MTA is not sweetness and light, but in fact has a history of underhandedness.  I also understand that TWU workers have much less of a raw deal than many other unions and workers in this city.  My personal opinion is that Roger Touissant has done his union more harm than good, and that the MTA's "final" offer wasn't all that bad.

My feeling is that everyone's an asshole in this situation.  That the lack of any significant contingency plan for people with disabilities blows chunks - and when  the strike is over, getting around still won't suck any less for us.

And I wish I got more than 6 - 7 miles per charge on my wheelchair.
I'm glad I'm not in the manual chair, though if I were stronger I might get better mileage. Or fit into random cars.

Sparrow knocks over 23,000 dominoes before being shot

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) — A sparrow knocked over 23,000 dominoes in the Netherlands, nearly ruining a world record attempt before it was shot to death Monday, the state news agency reported.

The unfortunate bird flew through an open window at an exposition center in the northern city of Leeuwarden where employees of television company Endemol NV have worked for weeks setting up more than 4 million dominoes in an attempt to break the official Guinness World Record for falling dominoes on Friday night.

Only a system of 750 built-in gaps in the chain prevented the bird from knocking most or all of the dominoes over ahead of schedule, "Domino Day" organizers were quoted as saying by the NOS news agency.

The bird was shot by an exterminator with an air rifle while cowering in a corner.

The organizers are out to break their own record of 3,992,397 dominoes set last year with a record of 4,321,000.

Michael Brown’s emails made public

Mark Frauenfelder: The emails former FEMA head Michael Brown wrote during the Katrina crises would be really funny, if not for the fact that his mismanagement needlessly ruined the lives of so many people. OK, even then, they’re still funny.

“Can I quit now? Can I come home?” Brown wrote to Cindy Taylor, FEMA’s deputy director of public affairs, the morning of the hurricane.

A few days later, Brown wrote to an acquaintance, “I’m trapped now, please rescue me.” “In the midst of the overwhelming damage caused by the hurricane and enormous problems faced by FEMA, Mr. Brown found time to exchange e-mails about superfluous topics,” including “problems finding a dog-sitter,” Melancon said.

Melancon said that on August 26, just days before Katrina made landfall, Brown e-mailed his press secretary, Sharon Worthy, about his attire, asking: “Tie or not for tonight? Button-down blue shirt?”

A few days later, Worthy advised Brown: “Please roll up the sleeves of your shirt, all shirts. Even the president rolled his sleeves to just below the elbow. In this [crisis] and on TV you just need to look more hard-working.”

That last part is my favorite. Enjoy the CNN article with more details.

NY Times reporter, or aspiring b-list novelist... [Oct. 30th, 2005|09:58 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]
[Current Music |Tiger Woods 2006, AGAIN]

So, I was doing my daily scan of the NY Times, and came across an article in the New York/Region section that is basically a profile of an army recruiter who has his work cut out for him in Harlem. A few sentences in, this line jumps out at me:

"Hey," he said, his voice a sleepy mix of fine Long Island sand and honey.

A sleepy mix of Long Island sand and honey? What? (The article doesn't reference Long Island at all, before or after that line.)

Now, if the piece were an essay in the NY Times Magazine, or something, that line wouldn't be so... odd.  But, it's an article about an army recruiter, not an overwrought short story.  I don't have the critical mettle to be extensive or eloquent about this trend (and I do think it's something you'll see a lot lately in the Times), but this has to be proof that several of their reporters must be aspiring or rejected novelists.

[Current Music |Stupid Tiger Woods golf game that should be done by now]

I'm finding LiveJournal pretty annoying this evening.  I should say that I am finding community posts annoying,  The individual stuff is charming as always.  It's been a long day, and I have been cold and wet for a good part of it (with more cold and wet on the way, WHEEEEE), which probably hasn't contributed to my overall mood and tolerance level.  It's like everything I'm seeing comes from [info]mock_the_stupid, or something.  Then again, I've been labeled a snob often in my young life.  Maybe that's it.

Like, this girl who posts in a New York community wanting to know how to use New Jersey Transit... and well, since she's posting, maybe we can tell her exactly how to ride the NYC bus.  Not like she could have looked up any info on the matter, or anything.

Or someone who posts in a language community with dreams of being an interpreter after college.  Talks about Romance languages, gets told that actually there are more than 5 that are in that category... has a "really?  you must be talking about dialects." kind of response.  Also throws into original post a question about a Spanish phrase in a Christina Aguilera song (for chrissakes).  Without much detail given,  and having never heard the song, someone (who happens to be a federally certified English/Spanish interpreter) takes a stab at the unclear song snippet, provides translation as well.  To which original poster is all "I speak Spanish so I didn't need a translation, and that's not what it said but thanks anyway." (That was almost the exact response)

Yeah, they speak Spanish all right.  Except that in posting what they wanted clarified from the song, they wrote "puertoricano" (for Puerto Rican), which the commenter helpfully pointed out, should be puertorriqueño.  But hey, he/she speaks Spanish, so it's all good.

Someone in a book community wanted book recommendations.

I was wondering if you can recommend me any books. Since im really picky, its hard for me to find books. I do ocassionally read books that dont seem to interest me at first but they turn out good. But this week, i want to read a book that I would find really interesting.

. . .

I like books that are realistic, psychological (sometimes), and/or romantic. But im not a big fan of romance novels. I also like historical fiction. Anything really but I dont want a depressing book.

Um, so what do you like? Picky? Really? I omitted the middle chunk of the thing, which listed books they do like, and how they like books from a specific, almost 100-year span. What??

Oh, there was also a happy little "free iPod" post where it didn't belong, and ensuing backlash, and the usual always off-topic posting (no one EVER posts about actual FREE things) in [info]nyc_for_free.

Maybe it's time for me to go to bed, when I am rambling and angry at the internet.

FAULT DETECTED [Oct. 10th, 2005|04:52 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]
[Current Mood | aggravated]

EDIT: I now have gigantic, but functional, loaner wheelchair. Pretty lucky, really. Now, if only the biblically torrential rain would let up for a bit so I can actually use it to go somewhere...

My wheelchair said its battery was charged when I started out today. Good enough.

I turned it off at the bus stop to put on my jacket.

Once turned on, it would not move.

Was pushed home 2 blocks by a kind stranger.

That could have gone much worse.

I have had lots of chair issues this past year, but none can really be attributed to the chair itself.  They've been the fault of people who are in charge of keeping it running, modifying it as needed, approving things.  My chair has been held hostage by bureaucracy, more or less.

There is definitely something wrong with the chair now.  And it's not a battery problem, because it's charged just fine.  Plugging a programmer device into the chair yields the following cryptic message: FAULT DETECTED E30 CPU EEPROM

How excellent.  It seems I am no longer immune to the electrical issues that plague so many powerchairs much earlier in life.  I've gone on about what a workhorse it's been over the last year and a half, but no more.  And once electrical issues start, I hear they never really stop.

It wouldn't be as frustrating if my manual chair were not so useless to me.  It's really just an indoor chair these days, not really good or safe outside.  And yet, I have a very busy week ahead...

Argh.

Blogs Attract Young, Wealthy Readers [Aug. 13th, 2005|03:00 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

I don't know what to say about this article, really.  I do know they missed me during their survey.

Blogs Attract Young, Wealthy Readers

Juan Carlos Perez, IDG News Service
Thu Aug 11,11:00 AM ET

Good news for Web log publishers with aspirations of making money off their sites--compared to the average Internet user, visitors to Web logs, or blogs, tend to be younger and to belong to a wealthier household, a study has found.

Blog visitors are also more likely to shop online and to connect to the Internet using a broadband connection, according to the study "Behaviors of the Blogosphere" conducted by comScore Networks. Unsurprisingly, blog visitors are also more active online, visiting almost twice as many Web pages as the average Internet user.

ComScore defines blogs as "mostly amateur online diaries." In terms of unique visitors, FreeRepublic.com ranked first in the first quarter, followed by DrudgeReport.com, Fleshbot.com, Gawker.com, and Fark.com. By visits, DrudgeReport came in first, followed by Fark.com, FreeRepublic.com, Gawker.com, and Slashdot.org.

"ComScore found that blog visitors represent a demographically attractive advertising audience. Blog visitors are disproportionately likely to be affluent, young, and broadband-enabled," reads the study, published this week.

Some Statistics

Blog visitors are 11 percent more likely than the average Internet user to have incomes of $75,000 or more, and are 30 percent more likely to live in households headed by someone between the ages of 18 and 34, the study found.

During the first quarter, the average blog visitor viewed 77 percent more Web pages than the average Internet user, and spent 23 hours per week online, compared with 13 hours per week for the average user, according to the study. Regarding e-commerce behavior, blog visitors are 30 percent more likely to shop online than the average user.

Proof of the rising popularity of blogs is that about 50 million U.S. Internet users (about 30 percent of all U.S. Internet users) visited blog sites in the first quarter of 2005, up 45 percent compared with 2004's first quarter, according to the study.

The most popular type of blog is the political one, according to the study, which was sponsored by blogging software and service vendor Six Apart and by blog publisher Gawker Media.

The study was based on comScore's tracking of the online activity of over 2 million Internet users.

Wal-Mart Nixes 'Singles Shopping'

Sat Jul 23,12:04 PM ET

Wal-Mart has ditched a program that helped single shoppers find love in the discount store's aisles.

Officials at Wal-Mart headquarters in Bentonville, Ark., ordered their Roanoke store to put an end to Singles Shopping, the only program of its kind at Wal-Mart's U.S. stores.

Taking a cue from Wal-Marts in Germany, the month-old program encouraged customers on Friday evenings to pick up a red bow they could place on their shopping carts as an invitation to other singles. "Flirt points" were set up in various sections of the store.

A Wal-Mart spokesman declined to comment on the reason behind the program's cancellation. But customer Dale Firebaugh, who showed up Friday night hoping to meet his match, said store employees told him several people had complained.

"I'm disappointed," said Firebaugh, 63. "Where can someone over 40 who doesn't smoke or drink or go to bars meet someone?"

People Mourn Boy Who Died at Disney World [Jun. 19th, 2005|11:07 pm]

[Current Mood | sad]

Am I missing something? Aren't you supposed to be "this tall" to ride those things, for starters? Which you wouldn't be at the age of 4.  It just doesn't sound like a ride little ones should be on in the first place...

People Mourn Boy Who Died at Disney World

Sun Jun 19, 4:00 PM ET

Hundreds of mourners turned out to remember a 4-year-old boy who died after going on a ride at Walt Disney World, and the child's mother recalled how her son wanted to give all his toys to children he met on a trip to Africa.

Daudi I. Bamuwamye, of Sellersvile, died June 13 after riding the "Mission: Space" ride at the Epcot theme park in Orlando, Fla. The cause of death remains under investigation.

"When you can't understand his plan, trust his heart," the boy's mother, Agnes Bamuwamye, sang Saturday at the funeral service at Bethel Baptist Church.

Daudi's father, Moses L. Bamuwamye, works in New York at the United Nations, and the boy traveled extensively with his parents. People who attended the service said Daudi's mother recalled how he wanted to give away his toys to African children.

Agnes Bamuwamye told authorities her son's body was rigid during the ride, but she thought he was just frightened. Afterward, he could not be revived.

The ride simulates a rocket launch and trip to Mars; it is so intense that it has motion sickness bags and several riders have been treated for chest pain.

Paul Anka sings "Smells Like Teen Spirit" [Jun. 8th, 2005|07:08 pm]

[Current Mood | seriously, WTF?]

This has actually been on my mind all day, since I came across it before leaving for work. I've put it in my "WTF?" files. And if you don't know who Paul Anka is, remember that ignorance is bliss.

Paul Anka Is Back, 63 and Swinging (article link)
By LORNE MANLY

TORONTO, June 6 - Paul Anka knows what people will think.

Why would a teen idol turned Las Vegas crooner like him, who wrote early rock 'n' roll hits like "Diana" and "Put Your Head on My Shoulder," who gave Johnny Carson his theme song and Frank Sinatra "My Way," release an album stuffed with 14 swinging renditions of rock songs from stylistic opposites like Van Halen and Billy Idol?

Why court the derision that Pat Boone suffered with his album of heavy metal cover songs by taking on Nirvana's hoarse scream of teenage angst, "Smells Like Teen Spirit"?

On Sunday night here, to accept his induction into Canada's Walk of Fame, the 63-year-old Mr. Anka answered potential doubters the best way he knows: musically and infectiously. Backed by a 17-piece band, he tore into "It's My Life," transforming the hit by Bon Jovi into a brassy, swinging song that would not have been out of place at a Sinatra show.

"I ain't going to be just a face in the crowd," he sang. "You're going to hear my voice, I'll shout it out loud." He was greeted with the loudest ovation of the night.

The day before, in his Four Seasons suite, casually dressed in jeans and a light blue shirt unbuttoned enough to reveal more of a deep tan, Mr. Anka discussed why he took on "Rock Swings," his 120th album. "There will be an initial knee-jerk reaction to Anka doing Nirvana, and people will say nail him," he said. "But I want them to at least listen to it. And anyone astute enough and that has any integrity musically will look at it and go, you know what, goddamn it. I didn't want to like it, but it's there, the quality is there."

Language police bar 'old,' 'blind'

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) --Oh heck: Hell hath no place in American primary and high school textbooks.

But then again you can't find anyone riding on a yacht or playing polo in the pages of an American textbook either. The texts also can't say someone has a boyish figure, or is a busboy, or is blind, or suffers a birth defect, or is a biddy, or the best man for the job, a babe, a bookworm, or even a barbarian.

All these words are banned from U.S. textbooks on the grounds that they either elitist (polo, yacht) sexist (babe, boyish figure), offensive (blind, bookworm) ageist (biddy) or just too strong (hell which is replaced with darn or heck). God is also a banned word in the textbooks because he or she is too religious.

Pregnant Woman Ticketed for Blocking Stairway
May 28, 2003 7:31 am US/Eastern

In the latest ticket blitz story, the Daily News reports that a pregnant woman was given a 50 dollar ticket for resting on the subway steps in Brooklyn.

Eighteen-year-old Crystal Rivera says she was ticketed last Tuesday by a female officer at the 86th Street station in Bay Ridge. The News says the pregnant teen told the officer she was tired and resting. It will cost her $50.

A spokesman for the police union says cops on the beat are being pressured to generate cash for the financially strapped city. PBA spokesman Al O'Leary says previously cops would give a warning but now they are being told to write the summons. The Bloomberg Administration says there is no ticket quota for police.

National Day of what?? [May. 1st, 2003|10:51 am]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Mood | indescribable]

I've been meaning to write of other things... not necessarily here, but there.

I'm away from home, but here and there there are dilemmas, uncertainty, and even some at death's door... all part of the wonderful tapestry that is life, of course.

But for now, these are all trounced by my discovery that today is in fact Loyalty Day, AND the National Day Of Prayer. Made official by the White House yesterday.

Wow.

The day of prayer announcement is especially good; full of references to God via the pronouns He and Him, despite the fact that "America welcomes individuals of all backgrounds and religions, and our citizens hold diverse beliefs."

I'd love to shake someone by the shoulders and ask, "How??". Except I already know how. I guess skimming through [info]sos_usa will have to do for now.
