| Nick's Crusade & the Community Choice Act |
[Apr. 23rd, 2009|03:47 pm] |
Transcription (as captioned):
Hello, and welcome to Nick's Crusade blog. This is a video blog of day 236 here in the hospital. I'm here in the hospital because I'm waiting for community services, and the [Medicaid] waiver that I'm on just seems to add another layer of complexity and bureaucracy, and makes things take longer...
And it's very frustrating to be stuck in a hospital when the only reason is, you just need services in the community. That's why it's so important that we pass the Community Choice Act as soon as possible.
I hope that soon I'll get out in the community, I'll get into my apartment with my partner, and that we can continue to advocate for the CCA, and for housing. There are so many people here that don't need to be here, that are only here because they don't have housing.
My voice is a little rough with a new trach that I got in August, here in this hospital, but I hope that soon, my normal voice, (which is higher pitched, and a little Southern) will be back.
Keep reading the blog for more updates.
Thank you, and I love you all.

| Sing After Me |

Classic Sesame Street: Sing After Me (Grover/Madeline Kahn)
From Episode 1839: Sesame Street has redone this song (with various performers) at least half a dozen times, but this is the original that inspired the others. Leave it to a comedian like Madeline to tease Grover with those unsingable notes near the end...

| Un verano en nueva york |
[Jul. 18th, 2008|06:04 am] |
If you grew up as a Spanish speaker, you're probably going to know this song. Particularly if you grew up in the U.S., and especially, well, in New York. The title, after all, translates to "(A) Summer in New York". The video is a lot of 70s Gran Combo love, which is okay, because without them, every kid who ever went to a hispanic house party three generations later wouldn't have this song in their blood. I can almost see little old me blasting this one out of a slow-moving car, because that's what you're supposed to do. |

Man Uses Wheelchair To Shovel Out You'd think this is an accessory that would be semi-available by now, but it isn't. Anyone want to help me turn into a snowplow? I'm only half joking... when it snows in any significant amount, I'm messed up for a week or more (along with plenty of other PWDs) because snow gets piled at curbs and bus stops, making it hard to get anywhere.
The article is old and the video link is dead, but he has the video on his website. Here someone else on YouTube also using a motorized chair as a plow. |

| The Boy with the Incredible Brain |
[Mar. 22nd, 2007|03:23 am] |
I know I am a sucker for these kinds of programs, people, and medical mysteries, not to mention British accents. But if you have 50 minutes to waste online (who doesn't?), you should watch this. | "The Boy with the incredible Brain" on Google Video | | Extraordinary People - The Boy with the incredible Brain
Daniel Tammet first came to worldwide attention in March 2004 on international Pi Day (3/14, of course) when he recited, from memory, Pi to 22,514 decimal places. It took over five hours and set a new European record. The event, which Daniel named "Pi in the Sky", coincided with Einstein's birthday and took place in front of Einstein's blackboard at the Museum of the History of Science in Oxford, England. Daniel used that event to raise funds for the National Society for Epilepsy because it was after a series of childhood seizures that his extraordinary number and memory abilities began, aligning him with that rare circumstance of the 'acquired savant' in which such exceptional skills surface following some CNS injury or disease. He is proud of the monies raised on behalf of this organization, and certainly gave this worthy cause a good deal of visibility.
In addition to number and massive memory skills, Daniel has exceptional language skills as well. He speaks French, German, Spanish, Lithuanian, Esperanto and Icelandic. He learned the difficult Icelandic language in seven days which was carefully documented in the one hour film about Daniel titled The Boy with the incredible Brain. |

Skidboot the super amazing dog just tipped my sap-meter. What a puppy. His human seems to be an innately great trainer. He could do wonders with service dogs. |
