Ready to Flock [Dec. 22nd, 2007|02:54 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , ]
[Current Mood | curious]

So [info]gomer43, my lovely adopter-of-all-things-geeky friend.. has convinced me to try using Flock as my browser.  Flock integrates all the social networking sites and feeds that everyone is hip to at the moment -- Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, del.icio.us, etc. And even this here LiveJournal, to which I am posting through the Flock interface. It's not fully integrated, but not that bad either...

Since I actually have accounts on many of the sites and services it works with, good internets sheep that I am, and at least 100 sites I read via RSS, I figured I might as well give it a try.  It feels a little like overload at the moment, but the truth is that I usually have a ridiculous number of tabs open in Firefox, plus an extra application or 2, to keep up with those things anyway.  Everything in one place can't be that bad an idea, at least in principle.

Anyone else managing their information overload with Flock, or another all-encompassing method?

Re: Your Brains, by Jonathan Coulton

Heya Tom, it’s Bob from the office down the hall
Good to see you buddy, how’ve you been?
Thing have been OK for me except that I’m a zombie now
I really wish you’d let us in
I think I speak for all of us when I say I understand
Why you folks might hesitate to submit to our demand
But here’s an FYI: you’re all gonna die screaming

All we want to do is eat your brains
We’re not unreasonable, I mean, no one’s gonna eat your eyes
All we want to do is eat your brains
We’re at an impasse here, maybe we should compromise:
If you open up the doors
We’ll all come inside and eat your brains

Listen and read more: here, and all about the new French version here.

Surprisingly moving. To me, anyway.

Slightly less powerful, but also happy, is this Flash game.  It is simple, addictive, and has lovely music.  I may never do anything again.

Also kind of cool is the original recording of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue; it's old and tinny, but also different than what we've all heard a thousand times.

But as the discussion progressed, I learned about the The March of the Sinister Ducks (with animation!), which is quite possibly the most bizarre duck-based song I've ever heard.

Like everyone else, here is me as a very skinny Meez. That wheelchair is not doing a thing for me, though. Only one, and no customization available. Shock!

animated version of me

In discussing the matter with [info]mlfoley, it occurs to me that not only is the wheelchair ugly, but you can't have a Meez with a wheelchair who is also doing something at the same time, like reading a book or wailing some wicked guitar. Perhaps a pointless email is in order? They're not too Mac-friendly, either.

In response to the email I decided to send after all:

Thanks for writing. You make a great point and I will definitely keep that in mind as we expand the site.

“My Cubicle” (listen here)
Lyrics by: Morning Sidekick
Performed by: Jym Britton
Parody on “You’re Beautiful” by James Blunt

Cube FarmMy job is stupid my day’s a bore,
Inside this office from eight to four
Nothin’ ever happens my life is pretty bland,
Pretending that I’m working, pray I don’t get canned.

My Cubicle, My cubicle
It’s One of Sixty two
It’s my small space in a crowded place
Just a six-by-six foot booth
And I hate it that’s the truth

When I give a sigh as the boss walks by,
no one ever talks to me or looks me in the eye.
And I really should work but instead I just sit here and surf the Internet.

In My Cubicle, My cubicle
It doesn’t have a view.
It’s my small space in a crowded place
I sit in solitude.
And sometimes I sit here nude.

It's a series of tubes. [Jul. 3rd, 2006|11:40 am]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Mood | tubes!]

Just stealing this from Wired and everyone else, because it's too good not to:

Your Own Personal Internet

The Senate Commerce Committee deadlocked 11 to 11 on an amendment inserting some very basic net neutrality provisions into a moving telecommunications bill. The provisions didn't prohibit an ISP from handling VOIP faster than emails, but would have made it illegal to handle its own VOIP packets faster than a competitor's.

Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) explained why he voted against the amendment and gave an amazing primer on how the internet works.

There's one company now you can sign up and you can get a movie delivered to your house daily by delivery service. Okay. And currently it comes to your house, it gets put in the mail box when you get home and you change your order but you pay for that, right.

But this service isn't going to go through the interent and what you do is you just go to a place on the internet and you order your movie and guess what you can order ten of them delivered to you and the delivery charge is free.

Ten of them streaming across that internet and what happens to your own personal internet?

Read more for the tubes... )
The full audio can be found here (also long).

Blogs Attract Young, Wealthy Readers [Aug. 13th, 2005|03:00 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

I don't know what to say about this article, really.  I do know they missed me during their survey.

Blogs Attract Young, Wealthy Readers

Juan Carlos Perez, IDG News Service
Thu Aug 11,11:00 AM ET

Good news for Web log publishers with aspirations of making money off their sites--compared to the average Internet user, visitors to Web logs, or blogs, tend to be younger and to belong to a wealthier household, a study has found.

Blog visitors are also more likely to shop online and to connect to the Internet using a broadband connection, according to the study "Behaviors of the Blogosphere" conducted by comScore Networks. Unsurprisingly, blog visitors are also more active online, visiting almost twice as many Web pages as the average Internet user.

ComScore defines blogs as "mostly amateur online diaries." In terms of unique visitors, FreeRepublic.com ranked first in the first quarter, followed by DrudgeReport.com, Fleshbot.com, Gawker.com, and Fark.com. By visits, DrudgeReport came in first, followed by Fark.com, FreeRepublic.com, Gawker.com, and Slashdot.org.

"ComScore found that blog visitors represent a demographically attractive advertising audience. Blog visitors are disproportionately likely to be affluent, young, and broadband-enabled," reads the study, published this week.

Some Statistics

Blog visitors are 11 percent more likely than the average Internet user to have incomes of $75,000 or more, and are 30 percent more likely to live in households headed by someone between the ages of 18 and 34, the study found.

During the first quarter, the average blog visitor viewed 77 percent more Web pages than the average Internet user, and spent 23 hours per week online, compared with 13 hours per week for the average user, according to the study. Regarding e-commerce behavior, blog visitors are 30 percent more likely to shop online than the average user.

Proof of the rising popularity of blogs is that about 50 million U.S. Internet users (about 30 percent of all U.S. Internet users) visited blog sites in the first quarter of 2005, up 45 percent compared with 2004's first quarter, according to the study.

The most popular type of blog is the political one, according to the study, which was sponsored by blogging software and service vendor Six Apart and by blog publisher Gawker Media.

The study was based on comScore's tracking of the online activity of over 2 million Internet users.

UPenn FISHER Telephone Speech Study [Jul. 14th, 2003|11:58 pm]

[Current Music |Animaniacs - The Monkey Song]

Someone posted about this study a few days ago in [info]linguaphiles (oops, it was actually [info]nyc_for_free). Thanks to their post, I have since signed up and begun participating, and thought I might announce it here:

FISHER is a telephone speech study supporting linguistic research, technology development and education conducted by the Linguistic Data Consortium at the University of Pennsylvania. (I participated in my first call this evening)

The basics:

  • FISHER is a legitimate linguistic research study being conducted by the University of Pennsylvania.

  • The FISHER system is able to call U.S. based numbers. (Canadian numbers might qualify, contact the LDC at UPenn to be sure)

  • You may receive FISHER calls on any type of phone, landline or cellular.

  • As a FISHER participant you will take part in 1 to 3 telephone calls talking to other participants -- typically people you do not know -- for ten minutes.

  • You will receive $10 for every successful call in which you take part --Please note, that in order to be compensated for FISHER calls, US citizens will need to provide their social security numbers (per University of Pennsylvania policy).

>> To learn more and register for the study, visit: http://www.ldc.upenn.edu/Fisher <<

** If you decide to register for the study, remember to use my referral number as your referral code: 47831 *** (or the code of anyone else you know who may be signed up)

Note- The FISHER study is particularly interested in male volunteers: "We will pay $1.00 for each Male Participant who, at your bequest, signs up for FISHER and successfully completes at least (1) call . . . We will pay a $5.00 bonus for each ten Male Participants you sign up who successfully complete calls."

Feel free to pass this along to anyone who might be interested.
