Song of the Day: [Nov. 30th, 2007|01:07 pm]

[Current Mood | amused]

Re: Your Brains, by Jonathan Coulton

Heya Tom, it’s Bob from the office down the hall
Good to see you buddy, how’ve you been?
Thing have been OK for me except that I’m a zombie now
I really wish you’d let us in
I think I speak for all of us when I say I understand
Why you folks might hesitate to submit to our demand
But here’s an FYI: you’re all gonna die screaming

All we want to do is eat your brains
We’re not unreasonable, I mean, no one’s gonna eat your eyes
All we want to do is eat your brains
We’re at an impasse here, maybe we should compromise:
If you open up the doors
We’ll all come inside and eat your brains

Listen and read more: here, and all about the new French version here.

[Current Mood | impressed]
[Current Music |"Somewhere Over The Rainbow"]

Okay, so you can go a lot of ways with this... like, why is a six year old on this show?  Is it fair to her, or anyone else?  What will they do with her as she gets to the next round(s)?  Why is there an audience for the auditions?  Why is Simon less of a jerk (in general, I've heard) on this show, than on American Idol?  Are there kids her age that can sing better? Is she the best?

But come on... the cuteness factor here is through the roof.

The cellphone salesman opera guy is pretty damn good, too (though a little pitchy here, if you ask me).

The year is 1989, and the American public is being scandalized by a wild new dance craze called the Lambada...

Luckily, Latin Americans aren't particularly ruffled, and adopt this latest Brazilian (but actually French and stolen from Bolivia) import with open arms.  And so, Spanish-speaking gatherings everywhere have impromptu Lambada danceoffs for the next year, where every self-respecting 9 year old girl is ready to show her stuff.

Surprisingly moving. To me, anyway.

Slightly less powerful, but also happy, is this Flash game.  It is simple, addictive, and has lovely music.  I may never do anything again.

Also kind of cool is the original recording of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue; it's old and tinny, but also different than what we've all heard a thousand times.

Welcome to 1995 [Mar. 10th, 2007|01:56 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , ]
[Current Mood | amused]
[Current Music |"Maria la del Barrio", Thalia]

And the quality television I grew up on:

It's the opening credits to a hugely popular Mexican soap opera called Maria la del Barrio, starring Thalía, who I guess around these parts is most famous for a KMart clothing line, and being married to Tommy Mottola.  She's also missing a rib.  Or two, I can't remember.

I also can't lie, I loved her novelas (which Wikipedia can tell you all about), at least the 3 mid-90s ones.  I didn't watch the last one (I was away from home by then) and the earlier ones, I'm not sure we got here.  The one I've mentioned is my favorite.  Just so over the top, and YouTube delivers fond televised memories of the Thalia era.   This scene ("Perfecto!!!!!" - thanks, David), which leads to the end of the soap, and shows the dramatic death of the insane evil villainess, is awesome.  Somewhere near the end of that clip they also show the miraculous recovery of the "crippled" (and therefore always frumpy dressing) girl who is in love with the previously put-up-for-adoption son of Thalia's previously insane and poor character, before she became wealthy and found him again 15 years later, after adopting a girl herself, whose parents later come looking for her.  Oh, there's just so much ridiculous detail, I feel bad if you don't know.

Hoy te dedíco... [Jan. 19th, 2007|09:33 pm]

Every Hispanic/latin/whatever person (especially in New York) older than 5 knows Héctor Lavoe whether they want to or not, or at least his music.  You don't have to wait for too many songs to go by at a party to hear his voice. He's the ultimate tragic hero, in salsa form.  Though I'll never live a life half as large or crazy as his, that song always rings a bit true, with its longing to find a path, and some luck in life.

I'm a little bit excited about the upcoming biopic, El Cantante.  Not because I think it'll be a great movie.  It won't have mass national appeal.  I'm not a fan of Jennifer Lopez.  And while I do like Marc Anthony (proof!), I don't know if I like him singing as Héctor.  His voice just isn't... heavy enough, you know?  But I know I'll go see it (me, choose to go to a movie?), because the life and times of "la voz" are just a part of the culture I was born into, even if I'm not Puerto Rican.  Plus, the music will probably kick ass in that hardcore 70s/80s New York  salsa kind of way. Or at least, I hope it will.  You might like it, too.

My new boyfriend [Oct. 24th, 2006|07:24 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Location |Sector 7G]
[Current Mood | dorky]
[Current Music |pls see post]

... is Beethoven.   Because I am a giant dork, but also because the Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor is so insane in the third movement.  You almost feel like the unrequited love he supposedly wrote it about.  You have to be nuts to play it, too.  Oh, if I could.

Beethoven has lots of lovely piano stuffs, but Mozart is still my main squeeze, after rediscovering the whole Clarinet Concerto, which I'd only had in pieces before.  It's got some childhood memories attached, which is funny because my childhood was as far from Mozart as you can get.  And still, there's that other violin concerto of his I have to find.

Of course, I have to keep in mind that all  my jazz and blues and standards boyfriends are not on this player yet (but a few good stand-ins).  And there's a conspicuous absence of Marc Anthony and other, less marketable Spanish-singing men (though there are a few old school, Spanish "how did [original iPod owner] know about this?" songs hiding in the mix).  And I could even get some Boyz II Men or even Babyface in the rotation, to bring back the puppy loves.

Or my newer flings, like Sufjan Stevens. The list goes on, really.

Oh, the many men of music...

I may have to save up for some tickets, if I'm not sick of every wannabe Broadway baby in the world belting it out by the time I get there. Who am I kidding... I'm one of them, with smaller pipes.

Cell phone symphony [Oct. 3rd, 2006|08:52 am]

[Current Mood | curious]

Scores of cellular phones trilled and twittered, beeped and burbled all at once inside a concert auditorium in this community outside Chicago. The orchestra onstage was unfazed. The composer was delighted.

On Sunday, in a perverse commentary on the scourge of modern concert halls, the Chicago Sinfonietta played the world premiere of the Concertino for Cellular Phones and Symphony Orchestra by David N. Baker, a professor of music at Indiana University and a prolific composer.

So I'm here in my headphones, fighting with a screenshot, looking for something to listen to, and WBGO is being awesome in a jazz [that I know] sort of way, celebrating Charlie Parker's birthday, which is cool in itself, and so playing Tito Puente and Machito which my dad would like (but more in a latin and less in a jazz way) and then Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, whom I somehow grew attached to in high school.

We all have our dorknesses.

(Of course, we'll ignore the fact that I'm listening to the radio because I'm done with having the new Christina Aguilera CD on repeat, which I think I kind of like.  Which is totally weird for me, starting with the fact that I have it in the first place.  So let's not talk about it.)

“My Cubicle” (listen here)
Lyrics by: Morning Sidekick
Performed by: Jym Britton
Parody on “You’re Beautiful” by James Blunt

Cube FarmMy job is stupid my day’s a bore,
Inside this office from eight to four
Nothin’ ever happens my life is pretty bland,
Pretending that I’m working, pray I don’t get canned.

My Cubicle, My cubicle
It’s One of Sixty two
It’s my small space in a crowded place
Just a six-by-six foot booth
And I hate it that’s the truth

When I give a sigh as the boss walks by,
no one ever talks to me or looks me in the eye.
And I really should work but instead I just sit here and surf the Internet.

In My Cubicle, My cubicle
It doesn’t have a view.
It’s my small space in a crowded place
I sit in solitude.
And sometimes I sit here nude.

I am a cat [Jun. 30th, 2005|10:14 pm]

[Current Mood | amused, but only by this]

From my non-LJ friend David:

These are lyrics to a song on my ipod by Shonen Knife, some Japanese band:

Sometimes I step into timeless zone
And I lose my way
I don't know where I am
Sometimes I feel like I'm in the Milky Way
And I lose myself
I don't know who I am

I discover whiskers of a cat in a timeless zone
And I put them on my face
In a moment I become a sweet little cat
And I dance on a flying saucer

CHORUS
I am a cat
I discover ears of a cat in the Milky Way
And I put them on my head
In a moment I become a sweet little cat
And I dance on a flying saucer

CHORUS

That's great. Must hear this song.

And now, I have.

Renee Olstead is so who I wanted to be when I was 15 (actress & jazz singer, plus she plays instruments, and she's cute). Her voice never gives away her age. I remember when Norah Jones came on the scene a few years ago, and everyone was all over her, to the point where her songs were everywhere... and god, did I get sick of them. I hope that doesn't happen with Renee, though she certainly deserves some attention. I guess there's always living vicariously - she's got red hair, too, so that'll be fun!

Blindsided [Apr. 15th, 2003|10:19 am]
[Tags|]

I'm not usually a lyrics quoter, or much of a current pop music person- I'm usually a few decades behind, so it takes me a while to catch up. I know who everyone cool is and all, but it would probably help to have cable, maybe some emp-tee-vee to broaden my horizons... every once in a while something catchy makes it through the filter. This morning I was watching a local morning news show, and they had Lucy Woodward as the entertainment. I hadn't heard of her, but MTV describes her as a "grown up Avril Lavigne". Hmm.

She sang her big single, called Dumb Girls, which was catchy, but at the end of the show she did Blindsided, which I had to download. Her songs are about love and heartbreak and all that, but they've got a bounce to them. It matches the day, bright and peppy (ignoring that we'll go from 77° to 40° in the next two days).

I had to go and look her up, and now I think she's cool because she was born in England, raised in New York, and her mom was a bellydancer. Better than Britney, anyway.

Yeah, I'm a dork, and deprived. But I know Avenue A!

Which reminds me, gotta help [info]mlfoley decide what to see when he comes to NYC...

Nothin' like walking down Avenue A,
But it's not like any other day,
'Cause I feel you more than ever now,
Throwing me off somehow,
Nothin' like a girl with an attitude,
But take it all away she don't know what to do,
Now I got you in my fantasy,
Over and over, humbling me,

Blindsided... )
