Carol Burnett, Julie Andrews, Groucho Marx [Feb. 1st, 2008|03:40 pm]

[Current Mood | amused]

I was looking at random journals, thanks to the no-doubt soon to be controversial new Explore LJ feature, and stumbled across [info]oldhollywood.  As with many communities, not every post is great, or even good.  But folks have linked to some nifty things, like:

Carol Burnett and Julie Andrews at Carnegie Hall (1962)

and

Groucho Marx in a scene from "Monkey Business"

I could watch this kind of stuff all day... which doesn't really mean anything, because both are very different kinds of performances, with the common thread being "made well before I was born".  Which includes just a few years of television and media, you know?

Ready to Flock [Dec. 22nd, 2007|02:54 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , ]
[Current Mood | curious]

So [info]gomer43, my lovely adopter-of-all-things-geeky friend.. has convinced me to try using Flock as my browser.  Flock integrates all the social networking sites and feeds that everyone is hip to at the moment -- Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, del.icio.us, etc. And even this here LiveJournal, to which I am posting through the Flock interface. It's not fully integrated, but not that bad either...

Since I actually have accounts on many of the sites and services it works with, good internets sheep that I am, and at least 100 sites I read via RSS, I figured I might as well give it a try.  It feels a little like overload at the moment, but the truth is that I usually have a ridiculous number of tabs open in Firefox, plus an extra application or 2, to keep up with those things anyway.  Everything in one place can't be that bad an idea, at least in principle.

Anyone else managing their information overload with Flock, or another all-encompassing method?

LJ Mobile, you say... [Nov. 8th, 2007|01:44 am]
[Tags|, ]

So here's my test of the new LJ mobile client for the Palm platform. So far, way better than trying to navigate the LJ update page on the mobile browser. And better than text LJ. But I'm sure I'll find something to complain about soon.

Hey, private messaging and editable comments are here, too. About time.

No, I don't think many languages have a simple way to convey the smoothness of one Mr. Barry White.

So, aleja, your LiveJournal reveals...

You are... 1% unique and 15% herdlike (partly because you, like everyone else, enjoy writing). When it comes to friends you are popular. In terms of the way you relate to people, you are wary of trusting strangers. Your writing style (based on a recent public entry) is conventional.

Your overall weirdness is: 22

(The average level of weirdness is: 27.
You are weirder than 49% of other LJers.)

Ducks, ducks [Mar. 8th, 2007|04:24 pm]

[Current Music |"Reading pornography, smoking cigars, ducks ducks!"]

So [info]filkerdave and I were quite engaged in the possibility that he may be writing a song about ducks (which he insists were Cuban Zombie Revolutionary Ducks, don't ask why).

But as the discussion progressed, I learned about the The March of the Sinister Ducks (with animation!), which is quite possibly the most bizarre duck-based song I've ever heard.

My ducks were HAPPY, Dave!

[Current Music |sizzling shrimp. wouldn't that make a good band name?]

So someone in a local community posted about looking for an apartment in Manhattan. If you're familiar with New York, you'll get how ridiculous their criteria is, and how they will never find anything:

looking thru craigslist all the time, all the decent apts seem to be in or close to Harlem...I sooo don't want to live anywhere near harlem. anyone moving out of the city or know of anyone moving out whose apt wil now be available for rent..moderatley priced(under 1200/month)no brokers, no basement apts...north of houston, south of harlem, and not on the UES???? not looking for roommates either

Um. Yeah. This person is already living in a much more affordable area of the city in Brooklyn. Unless millions are in their future, they are really SOL, because, well, that's how it is here.

It's funny, because there are some great places in Harlem (ooh, scary scary Harlem), and otherwise uptown. The only reason I "sooo" wouldn't live there is because of the way I have to get around, and all my current activities are in midtown or downtown which would mean I'd spend my entire life on the bus. Given the right roommates and rent breakdown, I'd consider it anyway.

Trouble at the LJ corral [Mar. 8th, 2006|10:15 pm]

[Current Mood | full]

As seen at [info]mariann, LiveJournal is going to start using advertising.  It's an opt-in thing, but not everyone is happy about it.  As a (mostly) paid user, I'm a bit lukewarm myself.

LJ: Changes to user subdomains [Jan. 19th, 2006|09:17 am]
[Tags|]
[Current Music |Hearing traffic from 12 stories up is always weird]

In case [info]news isn't on your reading list:
Changes to User Subdomains
Starting tonight, you can now reach your journal and community at a new, shorter user subdomain. No action is needed on your part.

All journals will now be located at http://username.livejournal.com. All communities will now be located at http://community.livejournal.com/username.
I'd just written a few pointless paragraphs on this, and an errant mouse click erased it all.  In brief:

  • Subdomains were one of the handier perks of a paid account, I think.
  • The extra voice posts being given to paid users to offset the domain thing are of no use to me (and lots of people outside of the US, or without local voice posting phone numbers).  I don't care about being able to make more S2 styles, either, but I'm probably actually bitter about not knowing how to make them.
  • The comments on that post show that as usual, people either loathe or love the change.  I'm a bit more in the middle, though I have taken sides on the many small issues that been raised between this post and the one about the nudge feature, which I hypocritically  used and then proceeded to disable on my account.  The new syndication icon is wrong, I say.
  • Where is the ability to edit comments, as opposed to deleting and re-posting?  That should have been here ages ago.  If Flickr does it, why can't LJ?  (Maybe I'm naive, but it can't be that hard if you know what you're doing).
  • This new subdomain stuff may mess with people who use RSS feeds, even if the old links still work.
  • People who rely on the memories feature are right to be unhappy that it doesn't work well.
  • For better or worse, I really have become on of those LiveJournal people.  I probably wouldn't go back to my own blog, though we will be using one for the website portion of [info]gimpgirl. It will be a custom thing, however.  No MT or WordPress, so we may not hate it.
  • So, I like LJ.  I do hope it doesn't "get all MySpace-y" or "Facebook-ish" as some have complained.  But it's a product, and they have to stay competitive... even if the competition causes eyeballs to bleed.

Little miss crankypants shouldn't read her friends page [Oct. 24th, 2005|10:27 pm]

[Current Mood | cranky]
[Current Music |Stupid Tiger Woods golf game that should be done by now]

I'm finding LiveJournal pretty annoying this evening.  I should say that I am finding community posts annoying,  The individual stuff is charming as always.  It's been a long day, and I have been cold and wet for a good part of it (with more cold and wet on the way, WHEEEEE), which probably hasn't contributed to my overall mood and tolerance level.  It's like everything I'm seeing comes from [info]mock_the_stupid, or something.  Then again, I've been labeled a snob often in my young life.  Maybe that's it.

Like, this girl who posts in a New York community wanting to know how to use New Jersey Transit... and well, since she's posting, maybe we can tell her exactly how to ride the NYC bus.  Not like she could have looked up any info on the matter, or anything.

Or someone who posts in a language community with dreams of being an interpreter after college.  Talks about Romance languages, gets told that actually there are more than 5 that are in that category... has a "really?  you must be talking about dialects." kind of response.  Also throws into original post a question about a Spanish phrase in a Christina Aguilera song (for chrissakes).  Without much detail given,  and having never heard the song, someone (who happens to be a federally certified English/Spanish interpreter) takes a stab at the unclear song snippet, provides translation as well.  To which original poster is all "I speak Spanish so I didn't need a translation, and that's not what it said but thanks anyway." (That was almost the exact response)

Yeah, they speak Spanish all right.  Except that in posting what they wanted clarified from the song, they wrote "puertoricano" (for Puerto Rican), which the commenter helpfully pointed out, should be puertorriqueño.  But hey, he/she speaks Spanish, so it's all good.

Someone in a book community wanted book recommendations.

I was wondering if you can recommend me any books. Since im really picky, its hard for me to find books. I do ocassionally read books that dont seem to interest me at first but they turn out good. But this week, i want to read a book that I would find really interesting.

. . .

I like books that are realistic, psychological (sometimes), and/or romantic. But im not a big fan of romance novels. I also like historical fiction. Anything really but I dont want a depressing book.

Um, so what do you like? Picky? Really? I omitted the middle chunk of the thing, which listed books they do like, and how they like books from a specific, almost 100-year span. What??

Oh, there was also a happy little "free iPod" post where it didn't belong, and ensuing backlash, and the usual always off-topic posting (no one EVER posts about actual FREE things) in [info]nyc_for_free.

Maybe it's time for me to go to bed, when I am rambling and angry at the internet.

Being too tired for any real post, I'll do as the LJ meme gods command. [Aug. 16th, 2005|08:25 pm]

Since participating in this in someone else's journal, I am hereby obligated to post this here.  And you are obligated to reply, of course.

LJ Icebreaker Game -- Break It, if You Dare!!!

1. Reply with your name/nickname and I will write something random about you.

2. I will then tell you what song/movie reminds me of you.

3. I will pick a flavor of jello to wrestle with you in.

4. I will say something that only makes sense to you and me. [if possible]

5. I will tell you my first memory of you.

6. I will tell you what animal you remind me of.

7. I'll then ask you something that I've always wondered about you.

8. If I do this for you, you must post this on your LJ.

DCSquares [Jul. 11th, 2005|09:26 pm]

[Current Mood | sleepy]

DCSquares is a very addictive little game.  It's free, and it was created by someone who I found randomly here on LJ but whose user name I can't remember, of course.

I like it because I'm no good at any real games that are out there... they're too demanding of my simple brain.  Green is good, red is bad - that, I can do.  Good for the shoddy hand-eye coordination, too.

Green squares... must get green squares... post higher scores on game site.
