Disablism sure isn't disabled at all [May. 1st, 2009|01:21 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , ]
[Current Mood | pensive]

Every person with a disability has encountered or experienced disablism/ablism.  Subtle and not-so-subtle discrimination based on the fact that they are different, that they are perceived as less because something about their body is different from the norm.

As a lifelong member of the club, a visibly disabled person with my visibly disabled person wheelchair (and my other, less visible disabilities), I like to think I've done a good job straddling the different worlds. I like to think that I have a solid presence in my local disability community, appreciation of the issues that affect people with disabilities, and that in my own ways, I do what I can to make a difference and help others (particularly when it comes to my involvement with things like the GimpGirl Community and other things online). I feel like I can also exist comfortably in world where people  don't necessarily know or talk about "gimpy" stuff...  I try to mix well with all kinds of people, at all levels of existence. I think I do a good job.

Though my life's path has wandered a lot (not to mention my own self-image),  I know that generally I am regarded as intelligent, useful, forward thinking, with potential for lots of things. I'm okay with that potential.

One of the things that's important in my life right now is my partner. He is a man with a disability, an advocate, a person currently stuck in an institutional setting, waiting to be able to live in the community with proper supports. The fact that he has to fight for it (along with thousands, millions of others) illustrates just how inherently disablist/ablist our societies are. Though there are people who know and believe fervently that it shouldn't be this way, and  in the U.S., potential legislation like the Community Choice Act that could make a real difference, it will take something more to shift the way things work. The way we are perceived on a grander scale.

With my partner in the hospital for the last seven months, we've had quite a roller coaster ride. Right now, I'm his primary support system (though not for lack of trying to expand the circle), in part because he is originally not from this city. Once he is home where he belongs, I know that that will change. But now, and in the future, and always, disablism will make it so that my partner, with his sharp mind and wit, but impaired communication (and non-optional ventilator accessories), will almost never be taken seriously by someone the first time around. And I will almost never be taken seriously as his partner, as a caregiver, as someone who can do something useful, because my legs don't work either.

We'll always have some version of our recent experience with a nursing administrator at the hospital, who said, during an emergency situation, that my continued presence until the situation was resolved  wouldn't really make a difference anyway, since I couldn't do X or Y or Z tasks that nurses would do. Never mind that convoluted hospital policies make it so I end up doing a lot of the things nurses won't do anyway...

We will march on. We will build our lives together, we will continue our lives as individuals, affected, shaped, and molded by our disabilities, but not defined by them. We will make our mark on the world together, separately, and with others, even if much the world chooses to interpret those marks through the misinformed screen of "ability", which in the end, only means what you make of it.

As posted to [info]gimpgirl: Topic of the month: What does GimpGirl mean to you? [Feb. 17th, 2008|11:43 pm]

[Current Mood | calm]

As posted to [info]gimpgirl and [info]no_pity (in edited form):

GimpGirl celebrates its 10th Anniversary!

Started in February 1998, the GimpGirl Community has been a long-time resource for women with disabilities.  We are currently gearing up to re-launch our new website, which has been on a bit of a hiatus. We're also becoming active on Facebook, as well as MySpace and the virtual community of Second Life. (See our website for more details, including how to get to our Second Life Open House, happening TODAY at 4:00 PM SLT/Pacific)

Our awesome LiveJournal community has been our mainstay for a long time, and we'd like to hear your thoughts as we move into our next decade...

TOPIC OF THE MONTH: What does being a "gimp girl" (AKA woman with a disability) mean to you?

For as long as the GimpGirl Community has been around, and long before that, people with disabilities, and especially women, have thought, written and talked about their identities -- how having a disability and identifying as a woman shapes (or doesn't shape) their lives.

What does it mean to be a GimpGirl for you? GimpGirl is a phrase used by our community, and of course it's not one that everyone uses. If you prefer a different phrase, what is it, and why?

EDIT:
Look under the cut to find out more about today's excellent GimpGirl open house event on Second Life!

Ready to Flock [Dec. 22nd, 2007|02:54 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , ]
[Current Mood | curious]

So [info]gomer43, my lovely adopter-of-all-things-geeky friend.. has convinced me to try using Flock as my browser.  Flock integrates all the social networking sites and feeds that everyone is hip to at the moment -- Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, del.icio.us, etc. And even this here LiveJournal, to which I am posting through the Flock interface. It's not fully integrated, but not that bad either...

Since I actually have accounts on many of the sites and services it works with, good internets sheep that I am, and at least 100 sites I read via RSS, I figured I might as well give it a try.  It feels a little like overload at the moment, but the truth is that I usually have a ridiculous number of tabs open in Firefox, plus an extra application or 2, to keep up with those things anyway.  Everything in one place can't be that bad an idea, at least in principle.

Anyone else managing their information overload with Flock, or another all-encompassing method?

Kool-Aid pickles, yum. [Aug. 21st, 2007|12:33 am]

[Current Music |Silence is good lately]

In exchange for something I did, a friend (from the South) said:

"I owe you something southern, like deep fried twinkies or kool aid pickles."

Now, I've seen deep fried Twinkies, on TV and such.  Kool-Aid pickles... those are harder to wrap my brain around.  I'm not a fussy eater (and I like pickles!), but can't imagine eating one and enjoying it.  Nope.  And yet, the fancypants NY Times caught on and wrote all about them a few months ago.

Maybe I just need to expand my palate.  In the meantime, what are some other Southern things I could be owed?  I'm open to both edible and non-food suggestions.

Things you learn in West Village piano bars

  • No one knows the words to Penny Lane.
  • A bottle of water costs $5. You won't even get a glass.  But be glad, because there is no cover charge.
  • Wheelchair = automatic staff freakout, until they realize you're actually bringing customers with you, not driving them away.
  • If your whole group is a choir, there will be singing.
  • Especially by self-proclaimed Jersey faghags who know every Madonna song.
  • Everything is a little more fun in a gay piano bar. (As if there are non-gay ones.)
  • Not fun enough to get a break on the 2 drink per person, per set, minimum.
  • But enough to make someone smile who wasn't before.
  • Elvis is watching us… from a distance.

[Current Mood | pleased]

Yesterday was the wonderful wedding of Rob and Aly.  Or, Rob and Aly, respectively.  (See also: [info]pong)

It's been a few years since a chance online encounter brought me a new friend in Rob.  Since then, we've developed an interesting, dorky, witty, book-sharing, apartment-lending, genuine relationship.  It was so neat to watch, if mostly from afar, the introduction of Aly as a new friend and important person in his life.  And then, it was great to meet Aly.  I just can't remember whether it was at home in NY, or during a trip to DC.

Our friendship hasn't been particularly ordinary, but i now count them both firmly as friends.  I'm really glad I was able to share in their wedding, a small and intimate affair, with a few sweetly awkward moments.  I was made to feel so welcomed as a guest, especially one with a few extra needs, by everyone involved.

I had a great friend traveling with me, and the chance to really be a tourist, in one of my favorite parts of the country.  There were some technical glitches, but those always seem to follow me!  They did not detract from the purpose of the trip, to witness two really kindred souls unite, surrounded by people they trust.  I am glad to be one of those people.

(I am not glad to be one of the people who did not have super camera skillz... you should have seen the amount of amateur photography happening!  A veritable Flickr-fest, I tell you.)

[Current Mood | excited]

.... is what I keep reminding myself.  Right now, the Honolulu Marathon is underway, and [info]francisb and his partner Jenn are off and running for their cause.  [info]oquawka is there to cheer them on.  I wish that I was, too!  I was so close, but sensible decisions kept me here.

I can't imagine what it will feel like when they're done.  But it will be nice to gush and be proud.... and sympathetic, they have to be back at work as early as Tuesday!

Tempted to order the official race DVD, but [info]jennylin and I concur that it's just too expensive for a fleeting glimpse of their heads, or something (although I admit I'd buy it if I could).

But no sour grapes!  I'm happy to imagine the excitement and the beauty of the island (enthusiastically described by [info]oquawka) as I obsessively refresh the Runner Search page (look for #9320) to see if there are any updates.

To meet, or not to meet [Sep. 22nd, 2005|12:23 am]

[Current Mood | tired]

It is well established that I am terrible at meeting up with people. Most plans to get together inevitably fail, in three general categories of fault - me, other people, or circumstances beyond control. I must say, the relief is so great when it isn't my fault.

So yes, very bad luck with social planning. And interpreting/missing cues from others.

And yet, I am SO much better at it than I was a few years go. Sad, but true... and maybe even promising, if not yet practical.

Team in Training, Santa Cruz and beyond [Jul. 28th, 2005|09:54 pm]

[Current Mood | pleased]

My dear [info]francisb has joined his local chapter of Team In Training for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  For his team, it means that they will be running the Honolulu Marathon in December, to raise funds for cancer research.  It's a cause that is personal to him in more ways than one (as both a survivor and someone who has lost a loved one to cancer), and I know I have been affected by it as well.

[info]francisb (Len) has been running for longer than I've been alive, though he had taken a break of sorts for a long time and re-started his beloved hobby only a couple of years ago.  It's been a fascinating process to observe, on a personal level.

Last weekend he and his running partner ran in the Wharf to Wharf race from Santa Cruz to Capitola.  It would have been great to see it in person, because it's just such a fun event.  And as a team, they had a blast and kicked butt.

It's great to witness his renewed committment to running, especially for a worthy cause.  And maybe just a little bit amusing that he's become a minor local celebrity, as a runner who happens to be blind.

Feel free to visit Len's Team In Training fundraising page, and consider contributing what you can.  This represents a major shift for one runner, and helps improve the lives of so many other people.

I bet you could ask him, if you really wanted to know.

That's all for now, really. Keep an eye on [info]superaleja for possible insights on the world of short-term vocational training (college? what you say? all your academic bail-outs are belong to us!), family nonsense, the weather, lovely lovely lovely tulips, and a possible powerchair (a big deal in a secret, longtime kind of way). And something about plugs. And my nephew. And music. And some other stuff, possibly about writing, itself.

Or most likely, nothing. (Although that wouldn't be fair to the patiently attentive, like [info]gomer43) In which case, you can watch this space for the next hot quiz, or other colorful thing making the LJ rounds, like:

Homer is love.

Yes, I know "marriage is love"... but Homer is even better. Case in point: I decided not to get married a while back, but I still watch the Simpsons voraciously. ;)

(Shut up, brain. Don't even think about bringing up that old engagement stuff.)

Oh... I forgot about the LJ-interview questions. There are only 3, so it shouldn't be very difficult.

But I suppose I should finish the typing I have currently committed myself to (for money, even). Me and my odd jobs. Gotta love scraping for cash! But I think I wouldn't know what to do with myself otherwise.

Would you?

Wow, some of you are really jerks.

What? Oh. Yeah... real entries... hmm. Not yet. I think my goal is to get everyone to take me off their friends list because I'm wasting valuable space. So that they'll then have to go read the other-journal. Right.

Also, lots of stuff happening, some good, some bad. Hard to put things into words, lately.

Emergency rooms suck. And money sucks. The End.

[Current Mood | drained]

In the style of the inimitable [info]mlfoley, I'd like to welcome [info]tariseregon and [info]supermama... whom I don't know (but any friend of [info]penguin001 is a friend of mine), and have known for some time (in the scary real world), respectively.

Both now a part of my tangled LJ code-giving web... oh, the power. Now to see if they'll become "LJ whores", as my otherwise very Christian [info]penguin001 describes himself these days.

It's all some kind of weird LJ almost "pay it forward" thing, I think. I give a code, I get the gift of paid time, I get more codes, I give another code... you other people had better be giving stuff, too. *shakes fist*

Oodles of thanks to [info]penguin001, who has prolonged the paid life of my LJ (previously on life support). Geekily brightening a weird night, day, life phase... *hugs*

My LiveJournal Sitcom
Living With aleja (FX, 6:30): aleja (Breckin Meyer) paints musicalley (Peter Fonda)'s ice cream sandwich orange. On the other side of town, linguaphiles (Dean Martin) breaks jennylin (Halle Berry)'s old 100-meter-dash record, but nobody sees it happen. That night, shachen (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) ruins coyabbit (Fairuza Balk)'s favourite mailbox while house-sitting. Meanwhile, gytterberg (Morgan Freeman) trades yearbooks with jwfoodog (Roberto Benigni). That weekend, gimpgirl (Catherine Bell) buys stephenking (Tommy Lee Jones)'s old english muffin. Hilarity ensues.
What's Your LiveJournal Sitcom? (by rfreebern)

This is funny. Heehee.
Hmm. Tommy Lee Jones as Stephen King sounds interesting. Halle Berry as [info]jennylin! One version had [info]mlfoley as Gina Lee Nolin (Nolan?), which I bet he'd like, and Alec Baldwin as [info]francisb, which I'd love to see. [info]jayteeone appears in severaI versions (as does Ben Vereen, oddly enough), and I think Jonathan Taylor Thomas would make an excellent [info]shachen!

I bet I could play with this all day. I still don't know who the heck Breckin Meyer is, though.

(first spotted in [info]ooshiny)

Also, from the author of the previous amusement comes:

Want to find out what pizza you and I can share? Put your name in the box next to mine and click the button to find out!

With those on my friends list who have already signed up for The Pizza Arbiter, I can share:

Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella, Oregano, and a perfectly-baked crust.

Sounds good!

Caught another fish in my LJ code-givin' net... yay for [info]jennylin!

She's spiffy. ♥ More of a bird type than a fish, though...

And I'm on my last code. Oh well, I need to be stopped anyway.

[Current Music |Cat Stevens - Cat's in the Cradle]

Someone from LiveJournal wrote me to make sure it was all right to add me as a friend; it was a very nice email:

"...I wanted to let you know I added you to my friends list. I hope you don't mind. I've noticed many of your postings - mostly the group "No Pity" [[info]no_pity], I guess - and I really like your take on things. So, I'd like to continue enjoying your comments in my friends list, too, if that is ok."

[snip]

"However, my main reason for wishing to continue reading your posts is that you seem very bright, intelligent and nice. I actually think I've learned a lot from your posts and the links you provide. I thank you for that."

And I thank you, for reminding me that I can be useful sometimes.

(But who'll help me... are quotation marks within a block quote redundant?)

The questions are really stupid... [Jun. 19th, 2003|04:12 am]
[Tags|, , , ]

But this is the best quiz, because all the answers come from the marvelous engrish.com (see also: [info]engrish)

I love engrish. I "hear" (read) lots of it almost every day. (My ESL/EFL student friends are very nice, really.)

No thank god Aqua Bar, I don't wanna die...I'll remember!
Oh you're the Aqua Bar! You really must remember
this always!

Oh yeah... I have questions from that interview thing mostly answered, I'll probably post them tomorrow. [I got 10 questions from non-LJ people alone, the rest of you are so lazy...] And then I'll inflict further punishment by linking to some drivel on my soon-to-be MovableType-enhanced regular journal. (I ♥ [info]gomer43!)

Oh yeah... this one's a keeper...

Oh yeah... he'll always be my "Canadian Mike", but for you, he's a [info]spacehobo, brand new to LJ. Yay for him, he's silly.

Boy, I'm saying 'oh yeah', a lot.
