| GimpGirl Presentation @ Dreams Fair on Second Life |
[Apr. 20th, 2008|11:32 am] |
Here is a picture of me, in front of our giant TV screen, as jennylin and I talk about gimpgirl (AKA GimpGirl Community), at the Third Annual Dreams Community Fair in Second Life.
"The Third Annual Dreams Community Fair highlights health/support, educational, and artistic groups in SL. There are over 60 informational booths and close to 80 events scheduled by those groups and others."

As posted to gimpgirl: Topic of the month: What does GimpGirl mean to you? |
[Feb. 17th, 2008|11:43 pm] |
As posted to gimpgirl and no_pity (in edited form):
GimpGirl celebrates its 10th Anniversary! Started in February 1998, the GimpGirl Community has been a long-time resource for women with disabilities. We are currently gearing up to re-launch our new website, which has been on a bit of a hiatus. We're also becoming active on Facebook, as well as MySpace and the virtual community of Second Life. (See our website for more details, including how to get to our Second Life Open House, happening TODAY at 4:00 PM SLT/Pacific)
Our awesome LiveJournal community has been our mainstay for a long time, and we'd like to hear your thoughts as we move into our next decade...
TOPIC OF THE MONTH: What does being a "gimp girl" (AKA woman with a disability) mean to you?
For as long as the GimpGirl Community has been around, and long before that, people with disabilities, and especially women, have thought, written and talked about their identities -- how having a disability and identifying as a woman shapes (or doesn't shape) their lives.
What does it mean to be a GimpGirl for you? GimpGirl is a phrase used by our community, and of course it's not one that everyone uses. If you prefer a different phrase, what is it, and why?
EDIT: Look under the cut to find out more about today's excellent GimpGirl open house event on Second Life!

| Ready to Flock |
[Dec. 22nd, 2007|02:54 pm] |
So gomer43, my lovely adopter-of-all-things-geeky friend.. has convinced me to try using Flock as my browser. Flock integrates all the social networking sites and feeds that everyone is hip to at the moment -- Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, del.icio.us, etc. And even this here LiveJournal, to which I am posting through the Flock interface. It's not fully integrated, but not that bad either...
Since I actually have accounts on many of the sites and services it works with, good internets sheep that I am, and at least 100 sites I read via RSS, I figured I might as well give it a try. It feels a little like overload at the moment, but the truth is that I usually have a ridiculous number of tabs open in Firefox, plus an extra application or 2, to keep up with those things anyway. Everything in one place can't be that bad an idea, at least in principle.
Anyone else managing their information overload with Flock, or another all-encompassing method?

| Kool-Aid pickles, yum. |
[Aug. 21st, 2007|12:33 am] |
In exchange for something I did, a friend (from the South) said:
"I owe you something southern, like deep fried twinkies or kool aid pickles."Now, I've seen deep fried Twinkies, on TV and such. Kool-Aid pickles... those are harder to wrap my brain around. I'm not a fussy eater (and I like pickles!), but can't imagine eating one and enjoying it. Nope. And yet, the fancypants NY Times caught on and wrote all about them a few months ago. Maybe I just need to expand my palate. In the meantime, what are some other Southern things I could be owed? I'm open to both edible and non-food suggestions. |

[Sep. 1st, 2006|01:49 am] |
Yesterday I had 84 friends on MySpace. Today I only have 83. That means someone unfriended me! I can't figure out who it is... my list looks about right, everyone is familiar. Knowing how crappy the site is, it could be that I didn't really have 84 friends in the first place, it often does weird things with numbers. I do know everyone I've added there, so I can't help but be curious who it might be that had to drop me... unless they quit MySpace altogether (because WHY would anyone drop me?) Oh, MySpace, you evil tease. |

Things you learn in West Village piano bars:
- No one knows the words to Penny Lane.
- A bottle of water costs $5. You won't even get a glass. But be glad, because there is no cover charge.
- Wheelchair = automatic staff freakout, until they realize you're actually bringing customers with you, not driving them away.
- If your whole group is a choir, there will be singing.
- Especially by self-proclaimed Jersey faghags who know every Madonna song.
- Everything is a little more fun in a gay piano bar. (As if there are non-gay ones.)
- Not fun enough to get a break on the 2 drink per person, per set, minimum.
- But enough to make someone smile who wasn't before.
- Elvis is watching us… from a distance.

Hi everyone – check out the link below, it’s a new magazine I’m helping to launch this month.
We won the account back in February and this site is going live next Monday. If you could please share your thoughts with me, good, bad, indifferent, that would be great. | Rob and Aly |
[Apr. 30th, 2006|09:36 am] |
Yesterday was the wonderful wedding of Rob and Aly. Or, Rob and Aly, respectively. (See also: pong)
It's been a few years since a chance online encounter brought me a new friend in Rob. Since then, we've developed an interesting, dorky, witty, book-sharing, apartment-lending, genuine relationship. It was so neat to watch, if mostly from afar, the introduction of Aly as a new friend and important person in his life. And then, it was great to meet Aly. I just can't remember whether it was at home in NY, or during a trip to DC.
Our friendship hasn't been particularly ordinary, but i now count them both firmly as friends. I'm really glad I was able to share in their wedding, a small and intimate affair, with a few sweetly awkward moments. I was made to feel so welcomed as a guest, especially one with a few extra needs, by everyone involved.
I had a great friend traveling with me, and the chance to really be a tourist, in one of my favorite parts of the country. There were some technical glitches, but those always seem to follow me! They did not detract from the purpose of the trip, to witness two really kindred souls unite, surrounded by people they trust. I am glad to be one of those people.
(I am not glad to be one of the people who did not have super camera skillz... you should have seen the amount of amateur photography happening! A veritable Flickr-fest, I tell you.) |

Rob likes taking photos without flash. They come out well. My hat is from Norway, or so we say. I like my hat.

| To meet, or not to meet |
[Sep. 22nd, 2005|12:23 am] |
It is well established that I am terrible at meeting up with people. Most plans to get together inevitably fail, in three general categories of fault - me, other people, or circumstances beyond control. I must say, the relief is so great when it isn't my fault.
So yes, very bad luck with social planning. And interpreting/missing cues from others.
And yet, I am SO much better at it than I was a few years go. Sad, but true... and maybe even promising, if not yet practical. |

| Team in Training, Santa Cruz and beyond |
[Jul. 28th, 2005|09:54 pm] |
My dear francisb has joined his local chapter of Team In Training for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. For his team, it means that they will be running the Honolulu Marathon
in December, to raise funds for cancer research. It's a cause
that is personal to him in more ways than one (as both a survivor and someone who has lost a loved one to cancer), and I know I have been affected by it as well.
francisb
(Len) has been running for longer than I've been alive, though he had
taken a break of sorts for a long time and re-started his beloved hobby
only a couple of years ago. It's been a fascinating process to
observe, on a personal level.
Last weekend he and his running partner ran in the Wharf to Wharf
race from Santa Cruz to Capitola. It would have been great to see
it in person, because it's just such a fun event. And as a team,
they had a blast and kicked butt.
It's great to witness his renewed committment to running, especially
for a worthy cause. And maybe just a little bit amusing that he's
become a minor local celebrity, as a runner who happens to be blind.
Feel free to visit Len's Team In Training fundraising page,
and consider contributing what you can. This represents a major shift for one runner, and helps improve the lives of so
many other people. |

HOORAY for penguin001!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What, you thought it was something about me? No, silly. But, his news is great, if you're privy to it. Like, super duper life-changing, closure-y kind of great.
I bet you could ask him, if you really wanted to know.
That's all for now, really. Keep an eye on superaleja for possible insights on the world of short-term vocational training (college? what you say? all your academic bail-outs are belong to us!), family nonsense, the weather, lovely lovely lovely tulips, and a possible powerchair (a big deal in a secret, longtime kind of way). And something about plugs. And my nephew. And music. And some other stuff, possibly about writing, itself.
Or most likely, nothing. (Although that wouldn't be fair to the patiently attentive, like gomer43) In which case, you can watch this space for the next hot quiz, or other colorful thing making the LJ rounds, like:
Yes, I know "marriage is love"... but Homer is even better. Case in point: I decided not to get married a while back, but I still watch the Simpsons voraciously. ;)
(Shut up, brain. Don't even think about bringing up that old engagement stuff.)
Oh... I forgot about the LJ-interview questions. There are only 3, so it shouldn't be very difficult.
But I suppose I should finish the typing I have currently committed myself to (for money, even). Me and my odd jobs. Gotta love scraping for cash! But I think I wouldn't know what to do with myself otherwise.
Would you? |

So many things have happened, especially lately. You probably know about them all, don't need for them to be written here. People wonder why I don't write, and I can't really say... if I could talk to you, you'd be one more person in my circle who might understand.
I'm still pleased and proud to have known you, and still feel a little ripped off that the time was so short.
Oh, all these things happening, to me, and to them, that family you carved out of love and lemon cakes and cats... who said this needs to make sense? I know I don't, these days. Your dear Len is here, and for that I am grateful. We'll have dinner at a restaurant and think of you, the best we can do.
Happy Birthday, Barbara. We miss you. |

Both now a part of my tangled LJ code-giving web... oh, the power. Now to see if they'll become "LJ whores", as my otherwise very Christian penguin001 describes himself these days.
It's all some kind of weird LJ almost "pay it forward" thing, I think. I give a code, I get the gift of paid time, I get more codes, I give another code... you other people had better be giving stuff, too. *shakes fist* |

This is funny. Heehee. Hmm. Tommy Lee Jones as Stephen King sounds interesting. Halle Berry as jennylin! One version had mlfoley as Gina Lee Nolin (Nolan?), which I bet he'd like, and Alec Baldwin as francisb, which I'd love to see. jayteeone appears in severaI versions (as does Ben Vereen, oddly enough), and I think Jonathan Taylor Thomas would make an excellent shachen!
I bet I could play with this all day. I still don't know who the heck Breckin Meyer is, though.
