I was told that the Armenian for thank you was shnorhakalutyun (transcribed), and that perhaps it was a loanword or something like that. Does anyone know its etymology and what it means literally in the language it was presumably borrowed from?

If you like Spanish, just for fun, I suggest you visit today http://meneame.net and try to read it. Why? Today, at least in Spain, it's the Innocent Saints day (Día de los Santos Inocentes)- our equivalent for April Fool's day. The forementioned webpage's joke consists in "translating" all its main webpage into a Spanish internet lingo called "HOYGAN".

A lot of Spanish-speaking internet users make constant spelling mistakes confusing homophone words and misplacing and misusing H, LL, Y, J, G, V, B, S, C, Z... Since most of these users also write in capital letters, this "lingo" is called "HOYGAN", meaning that most of these posts should have started with "Oigan". The process was made using a filter that simply makes every possible spelling mistake when writing in Spanish.

Meneame is the Spanish equivalent of services such as digg, so you will find news and links to certain blogs. So if you want to read the good version of what you're reading, just click on the "Comentarios" and you will see the change. Because of today's date, you'll find also a plethora of false news.

Director Terry Gilliam's latest script called for a vaudevillian take on Satan, a Prince of Darkness in a pencil-thin moustache.

When Tom Waits agreed to step into the role for "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus," Gilliam was thrilled.

"If you're going to have a devil in your life, Tom is the man," he said.

Indeed, given Waits' technicolour performance in the film, it seems a role he was born to play - just don't say that to the woman who gave birth to him.

"Don't tell my mom," Waits told The Canadian Press earlier this year at the Toronto International Film Festival. "She's really upset. Pretty pissed off about the whole thing."

Brittany Murphy's Husband Claims Being Victimized by Press [Dec. 28th, 2009|01:23 am]

Brittany Murphy's husband Simon Monjack has accused the media of publishing unfair stories about him following his wife's tragic death - insisting the press is targeting him because he is not an attractive Hollywood star. Murphy passed away earlier this month, December 2009 after suffering a cardiac arrest at her Hollywood Hills home in Los Angeles.

Monjack is adamant many of the reports that have surfaced after Murphy's death have been unfairly negative, with some publications detailing his past financial problems and calling him a "conman." And the British screenwriter is convinced he is being victimized by the press because he doesn't compare to his wife's ex-boyfriend, actor Ashton Kutcher.

He tells Britain's Daily Mail newspaper, "I know I have been called a conman. I am not perfect. I never said I was. But there has been so much rubbish written about me and Brittany. Most of what you read is made up. My problem is that I do not look like Ashton Kutcher... Nor do they like the fact that she married someone who was not famous. (In Hollywood), stars like stars to marry other stars."

And Monjack has slammed reports which suggested his late wife was taking a dangerous cocktail of prescription drugs before her death, insisting most of the pill bottles which officials found in their home were old.

He adds, "I know what the inference is by all those pills. That she was some kind of addict, but addicts hide away their pills. They do not leave them on the nightstand like Brittany. Some of them were old and date back to when Brittany had some ailment or other. You know how people accumulate things and never throw them away."

5 Brüno (Larry Charles) Don’t listen to the critics—it’s better than Borat. Imagine a hetero teen couple in a mall on a first date somewhere in Middle America watching Sacha Baron Cohen pantomime every known gay male sex act, ending in a joyous “facial.” Sometimes audiences get what they deserve.

6 Lorna’s Silence (Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne) How do these great art films get financed? European socialism, that’s how, and I’m glad the taxpayers abroad put up the dough for this Tracking Shots“R”Us masterpiece. Only the Dardenne brothers could get away with not showing the dramatic action that climaxes the whole movie. Just think if they had to test-screen this film in America!

7 Broken Embraces (Pedro Almodóvar) There was some grumbling from Cannes that this wasn’t one of Pedro’s best, but boy were those rumors wrong. It’s a beaut! A relentlessly intelligent melodrama filled with so many dizzying plot points that you’ll experience vertigo.

8 The Baader Meinhof Complex (Uli Edel) Now here were some kids who knew how to cause trouble! Hmmm...What should we do today? Stop the Olympics or blow up a commercial airplane? These radicals made the Weathermen look like pussies.

9 Whatever Works (Woody Allen) Gerontophilia never seemed so appealing. This time, Woody goes a little gay and lives to tell about it with lovely, comic success. I am so mad I don’t have this director’s career.

10 The Headless Woman (Lucrecia Martel) Bleached hair, hit-and-run accidents, in-laws with hepatitis? Huh? I didn’t get it, but I sure did love it!

Argh there's something wrong with my battery. Gosh, idk why my MacBook has been so rude to me lately but this one's the worst of all my problems.

When running on battery power, when it gets low-ish... I'd say less than 20%... the entire computer just shuts off. It doesn't give me a warning to connect to my AC adapter soon and it doesn't even get to red or anything on the battery meter. It just shuts off.

NOOOOWWWW.... the battery is constantly stuck on "Finishing Charge..." when connected to the AC adapter.

Should I just go ahead and schedule an appointment at the Apple Store or is there something I can do to remedy these battery malfunctions on my own?

Hollywood actress Lindsay Lohan is planning a trip to Guatemala for charity work after returning from a visit to India, said her mother Dina Lohan.

The actress flew to New Delhi earlier this month to shoot a BBC documentary about child poverty and human trafficking. The charity work “humbled and moved” former wild child Lohan so much that she is now working on taking her philanthropic efforts to Central America, with the help of TV titan Oprah Winfrey, according to WENN.

“Lindsay definitely wants to give more back. We are now planning a trip to help the children of Guatemala, which will be filmed by Oprah’s (TV) network,” said Dina.

Until Brittany Murphy lent her voice to the penguin Gloria in the 2006 animated hit Happy Feet, the public had gotten only a taste of the chanteuse within the actress on a No. 1 dance club track called "Faster Kill Pussycat," written and produced by Grammy-nominated British trance artist Paul Oakenfold.

"Brittany trained as a singer before she did as an actress," Oakenfold tells PEOPLE. "She was a great actress but she had great vocal potential."

At first, Murphy wasn't so sure she wanted to be attached to Oakenfold's song. She told PEOPLE in 2006, "I've been singing my whole life and [recording] a lot of anonymous vocals. And this was another anonymous vocal, 20 minutes behind the booth in the recording studio two years ago. Then Paul had asked me if I'd put my name on it. The song is so incredible, I said 'Yes,' and we made a video."

But Oakenfold intended Murphy to be the centerpiece of his music video all along. "Her presence on the video is very powerful," he says. "She is very commanding visually and that's what we wanted. We wanted that energy and she did a great job."

As for putting her name on the song, Oakenfold recalls, "I said to her, 'Why hide behind something? You have a really great vocal. People are going to be shocked and pleasantly happy with what they're going to hear. You are not one of these actresses who are trying to sing and not doing a good job of it.'"

And he should know.

"I demoed three other girls on that song," Oakenfold says, "and some of the girls were pretty big singers – and Brittany blew them away."

In recent years, Murphy had been in the process of recording her own album. "She would have done well," Oakenfold says. "She wanted to try this with me, this smoky blues sound with electronic rhythms. She wanted to sound more traditional originally but I told her we should go more edgy. She was really excited by that and it's just a shame it never got as far as people thought it could. It's just a shame that the world is not going to hear more songs of Brittany Murphy."

When it comes to provocative stage routines, there's none raunchier than Rihanna's.

Except for this New Years Eve when the pop beauty could be performing in a sensible woollen sweater and a comfortable pair of jeans.

The star has been running around in next to nothing in Barbados all Christmas and is due to perform in sweltering Abu Dhabi on New Years Eve.

But we can reveal she has been told to dress conservatively for her gig at the Emirates Palace. And, as she's said to be making $500,000 for her performance, she's likely to do exactly what she's told. which means the white slashed latex body suit she wore at the American Music Awards [not to mention her collection of eye-popping bras] will be mothballed.

Her team are now said to be working frantically on new outfits which are respectful of local traditions.

A source tells us: "Rihanna is tearing her hair out over what to do; she wanted to put on her most eccentric and provocative show yet. She knows that she'll have to compromise her style to fit in with local traditions but a huge part of her show is her sexy stage gear."

The dress code in Abu Dhabi does not encourage excessively revealing outfits -- but it's no secret Riri is the if you've got it, flaunt it type of girl. Organizers are getting hot under the collar about possible wardrobe choices but they trust it will be handled tastefully.

The star has had an eventful year: she was assaulted by her ex Chris Brown in February before bouncing back with her Rated R album, so she'd be forgiven for enjoying a few drinks to see in 2010. But it seems there could even be a problem with that.

We're told: "Her people are trying to iron out all of the details for the rider which is proving to be somewhat problematic."

Apparently Rihanna always likes to have some bottles of vodka in her hotel room, but she may need to obtain a license if she is to store the alcohol in her dressing room during the gig. She would have loved to have a party with her team straight after the show and pop some champagne, too.

Oh well, she can always cheer herself up by counting all the money she's just earned.

Slo Gin Mini & an iBook that can hold it's DVD. Too well. [Dec. 27th, 2009|10:43 pm]

Hiya folks, got two questions for the group and I'm hoping some one can steer me in the right directions.
 
I'm running a Duel Core Mini and it's starting to slow down on me. I suspect it's partially due to the age of my processor. The other problem probably has more to do with the size of my HD. Starting to run out of room here, so I went out and got a 1TB external figuring I could offload a movie or two, my  music + pics, and a few other things that might be slowing the system down. Basically pare the internal HD down to the OS and run everything else external. Here's my first Q; 
 
1) How does one migrate iTunes from one drive to the another without 
    compromising accounts or permissions?    
 
I've also recently had a G4 iBook given too me. Weirdly enough it runs faster than my Mini, however I've got one problem with it. I tried to play a video DVD on it's internal dvd drive and, well, now I can't get the damn disk out of it. When I try to eject the DVD dismounts from the desktop, the machine clunks, wheezes and  grinds, then the DVD re-mounts and pops back up on the desktop. This particular flavor of iBook does NOT have a manual eject and I've tried everything they recommend in the apple tech help forum. Including taking the battery out and resetting the system clock. Here's my other Q:
 
2) Short of going in with a set of pliers and ruining the Drive / DVD how, 
   the HELL, do you get a DVD out of an iBook with no manual eject?
 
At this point I'm about ready to take it down to the apple store and have them take a look at it. Maybe even see if putting a new drive in an OLD machine might be, in any way, cost effective. After all the machine was GIVEN to me. A few bucks in the hole is, pretty much, just an investment. IF it's ONLY a few bucks.
 
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Making the most of her visit back home with the family, Lindsay Lohan attended the New York Islanders vs New York Rangers game at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Saturday evening (December 26). The “Georgia Rule” actress was all decked out in her Rangers gear, enjoying the on-ice action alongside her brother and sister, as well as a few friends.

The 17-year-old Hannah Montana star reportedly wanted her pop singer friend to get the words Just Breathe - which Cyrus has etched under her left breast - inked onto her body.

However, Swift - who has no body art - was said to be horrified at the thought of getting an inking and refused go under the needle.

My Christmas haul:

-Fraggle Rock S4
-G-Force
-Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince DVD. This was more for completion's sake than any interest in the film. Frankly, it reeked like rotting fish balls in rancid miso. Why call it HBP at all if you're going to gut the entire Snape backstory/crisis of conscience and battle of heart versus "greater good"?

-The Closer S4
-Fringe S1; This is awesome, by the way. I love crazy-ass Walter Bishop. Peter Bishop is a less likeable Patrick Jane, but he's not so horrifying that I want to gnaw open my wrists and gouge out my own eyeballs with toothpicks.

-A Muppet Christmas Carol
-Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen
-Dexter S3

Can you tell I like movies and television shows? Roomie got S1 of Deadwood and a passel of CDs. My mother got him a clock radio. Why, I'm not certain. I suspect it's because she'd promised him a boombox four months ago and never delivered, and in her mind clock radio=boombox. She got me a gift, too, though it currently remains wrapped beneath a naked Charlie the tree because I promised I'd wait until she came back. She made noises about having a belated Christmas dinner, but odds are, she'll forget about it and the present will languish beneath the tree for two weeks until I get frustrated and open it in an act of defiance. She said she was bringing us a goosedown comforter, but I'll believe it when I see it. I'm still waiting for the armrests she promised to order from Quickie, and for an accessible shower.

I haven't showered since September; I've been taking what Roomie charitably calls "whore's baths" with the help of baby wipes and washing my hair with the sprayer attachment in the sink. My butt itches. I chafe. My skin is terrible. They've been promising to fix the shower "next week" for three months. I finally persuaded my mother to at least install a detachable shower head until PC could be assed to renovate the bathtub. She promised to do it before she left. She didn't. PC bitched about the waste of putting in a shower head when he was going to fix the bathroom "soon" anyway. I think about my mother's promises that moving here would lead to better care and quality of life and want to cry. The house is cleaner, but I'm dirtier and less physically comfortable than I ever was in Tallahassee. Guess who's going to get yelled at if and when I finally develop a raging infection? Hint: It won't be her. At least I could wash my own ass in Tallahassee.

In sum, I love my house, but I hate my mother, and I'm wondering if I could sue her for fraud and neglect. If I had known she was going to be so utterly remiss in her end of the bargain, I would've told Roomie to kiss my ass and taken my chances with the apartment inspector, but none is so optimistic as a child gazing into the face of its mother. Mea culpa and should've known better.

A new extended TV spot for Lasse Hallström's upcoming Nicholas Sparks adaptation "Dear John" has hit the Web recently, and you can see it above. It's basically a short version of the theatrical trailer.

In the flick, Amanda Seyfried plays a young woman falling in love with a solider (Channing Tatum) while he’s on leave. When he's deployed, however, the two try to maintain their relationship via love letters.

Also starring is Richard Jenkins, who plays John's father. Jamie Linden, who penned "We Are Marshall," wrote the script. "Dear John" is set to open Feb. 5, 2010. I will chat with the film's stars early next year.

Bradley Cooper was spotted Tuesday on the way out of his LA home. He's currently playing host to his visiting parents, though he has girlfriend Renee Zellweger to help keep them company. Bradley and Renee still have been able to sneak out for a recent movie night, as their relationship grows stronger despite you guys being unsure they'd make it this far. All in all it seems like 2009 has been a good year for Mr. Cooper, from his successful relationship with Renee to a Golden Globe nomination for The Hangover.

My sister's boyfriend picked up a stray cat. Somebody cut off his whiskers, poor thing. Who would do that to a sweet little kitty??? (A very sweet cat - you can even rub his tummy and he doesn't seem to mind! Who would have cut off the whiskers of such a trusting darling? Why would anybody do such a thing?)

Anyway, we can't keep a cat at the moment, too many people with allergies in the house. This little guy is an unneutered male. Judging from his size and his general behavior, I put his age at somewhere around a year, probably just under. He appears to be healthy, and I don't see any obvious signs of fleas. He's very sweet and friendly - actually, that's my only caveat about people wanting him. By the way he acts, it seems he's very much in need of attention. This might mellow down in time, at the moment he's a bit high-needs. If you're working 20 hours shifts, he might not be the cat for you.

We're on the North Shore of Staten Island, no car. Anybody who can come by here is welcome to get the kitty, or we can trek him into Manhattan or maybe a stop or two into Brooklyn on the train. I don't know how he'd be with another cat in the home, but my guess is he's young enough to adapt.

We don't think this is a neighbor's cat, I know most of the cats with people and I'm going to check with my two crazy-cat-lady neighbors (I'm the third, currently catless though I am, so I can call them that :P) because they're bound to know the remaining ones if they're outdoor cats. (Or indoor cats. One of them hands out coupons for reduced-cost neutering if she knows you have an unfixed kitty.)

Teaming up for a romantic holiday getaway, Jude Law and Sienna Miller were spotted side-by-side on the beach in Barbados on Sunday morning (December 27).

With the “Sherlock Holmes” hunk’s kiddies along for the island vacation, Jude and a bikini-clad Sienna played in the sand and frolicked about in the water as they continue to reignite their relationship.

Lady GaGa seems to be New Year's hottest ticket, with her scheduled performance at the Fontainebleau in Miami having sold over 1 million dollars in ticket sales.

The 'Poker Face' singer is said to be getting about 300,000 dollars for the show.

Based on sales through Web site NewYearsEve.com, tickets for the singer's performance to ring in 2010 are almost non-existent, with only a few 25,000-dollar tables left and some general admission seats at 425 dollars.

"I'm in awe of the fact that Lady Gaga will make the Fontainebleau the hottest ticket in America on New Year's Eve," the New York Post quoted Andrew Fox, the site's founder, as saying.

all of them of "suspicious" origin.... number i heard last was "9" of them between 2ish-3ish last night, all of them were put out posthaste, but 2 people died.... i'm really shocked actually...

word is spreading faster than the fires though, and people of NoHo (and elsewhere in the Valley) are banding together and rushing to "be there" for those who were hurt....

i'm not at all shocked to hear that part.

everyone is terrified about what is going to happen when the System finally does go kapput (please G-d, NOW!) and i'll tell you what will happen.... we will be terrified, and devastated, and there will be idiotic-System-worshippers who tear out their hair and gnash their teeth (and probably do a bit of looting and stampeding over the weak/etc.) but once those moronic lemmings go ahead and leap to their death, the rest of us will be able to just shrug it off and go ahead and live our lives, and WHILE doing so, we WILL "be there" and take care of each other.

sorry if you disagree, but that is what i've seen (in random disaster/crises here and there throughout this life) so that is my story, and i'm sticking to it.

Rapper Kanye West got into the Christmas spirit by making a surprise appearance at the Los Angeles Mission Saturday (Dec. 26). The Grammy winner, alongside longtime girlfriend Amber Rose, joined other volunteers and served lunch to the homeless, who greeted the Chicago native and took pictures. "It's just important [to give back] when you're very blessed," West told TheBoomBox.

West showed up ready to work. He went straight for the kitchen, put on a apron and got on serving duty. "[It's nice] to spread your blessings and take time out, especially during the holidays to appreciate people who never get that appreciation. It makes me feel really good to come out here, [with] my family, and I just thank ya'll [the Los Angeles Mission] for allowing us to be apart of this."

The Los Angeles Mission is a nonprofit organization that has been serving the homeless for more than 70 years. Located in L.A.'s downtown Skid Row district, the organization offers employment, transitional services and rehabilitation to those struggling with substance abuse.

West is reportedly hoping to marry Amber Rose next year.
